This medicine is made from the venom of Indian cobra. Naja produces a typical bulbar paralysis. Causes no hæmorrhage but only œdema, hence the victims of this reptile frequently bear very little sign of external injury a small scratch or puncture being the only indication where the fangs have worked their havoc. 

The tissue lying beneath the wound is colored dark purple, and a large quantity of viscid blood-like fluid collects in the vicinity of the wound. 

An intense burning pain at the spot bitten is the first symptom.

 In man there follows an interval before fresh symptoms occur. 

The average is about an hour. 

Once developed, the symptoms follow a rapid course. 

A feeling of intoxication is produced, followed by a loss of power over the limbs. 

The patient is bereft of speech, swallowing, and the control over the movement of the lips. 

The saliva is ejected in large quantities, the respiration gradually becomes slower and slower, and at length ceases. 

Conscious all the time.

Naja is not a hæmorrhagic or septic, medicine like Lachesis and Crotalus. 

Its action settles around the heart; valvular troubles (Mitral Valve). 

Marked surging of blood upwards, marked dyspnœa, inability to lie on left side.

Hypertrophy, and valvular lesions. 

Organs seem to be drawn together.

In a general way, it is indicated when organs seem to be drawn together, especially ovary and heart.

Neuralgia of l. ovary, with palpitation and pain about heart.

Heart pains were concomitant with left ovarian affection.

The pains came on a week before menses, increased till the flow appeared, and then disappeared till next month.

Angina pectoris, acute pain, with loss of breath.

After articular rheumatism, severe pain in heart, extending to shoulder, neck and arm, with deathly anxiety, the attacks wake from sleep, palpitation, constriction, dry cough, etc.

Oppression of chest amounting almost to suffocation, feeble irregular almost imperceptible pulse; anemic appearance - inability to speak.

Feeling awful heat in her system.

Cramp ascend into neck; holds hand over it.

Dysmenia since the function was established.

She had shooting frontal headache, pains in eyeballs necessitating rubbing.

Cramp pain in region of left ovary.

Faintness.

Hypogastrium extremely sensitive to touch at time of menses.

Extreme restlessness with the pain.

During the menses the pains suddenly became very severe. The flow stopped when the pain was at its worst, and returned next day with relief from pain. 

Depression and lowness about the heart.

Ribs feel broken.

Inability to speak, with choking, nervous, chronic palpitation.

Palpitation, visible.

Severe pains in left temple, cardiac and ovarian regions.

Sensation as if heart and ovary were drawn together.

Pains about heart extending to nape of neck, left shoulder and arm, with anxiety and fear of death.

Pulse slow, irregular. 

Dragging and anxiety in the precordia occurring in great grief.

Nervous palpitations and faintness; frequent sensation of swelling or choking in the throat, with dyspnea, and occasionally of anesthesia down right side.

Grasping at throat with the choking sensations.

Oesophagismus.

Diphtheria with impending paralysis of heart.

Symptoms < at night; on walking; by lying on left side, patient awakens gasping; surface blue.

Persistent palpitation for nearly a year, without organic disease of the heart.

Very susceptible to cold. Vertex sensitive to cold.

With heart symptoms, pain in forehead and temples. 

Diseases, primarily depending upon degeneration of motor cells. 

Control of sphincters lost.

Hay fever, with asthmatic complications, after the stage of coryza and sneezing has mostly subsided, especially with a feeling of dryness in the larynx, suffocation - especially on lying down, has to be held erect in order to breathe; the suffocative spells occur after sleeping (Lach.).

Autumnal catarrh: flow of water from nose, intense sneezing - which > the breathing. Dryness in the lungs with great difficulty of breathing - < on lying down. Constant heat of head and face. Pulse slow, sometimes as slow as 45. Cannot endure any mental exertion. Sweating of palms. Appetite voracious. Stitching pains in heart.  

Asthma with difficult breathing, < lying down, > sitting up

In diphtheria it is similar to Lach., the patient grasps at his throat, has a feeling of choking, fauces dark red, breath fetid, hoarse cough, with rawness in larynx and upper part of chest. After diphtheria, threatening paralysis of the heart, the patient becomes blue, gasps for breath on waking, pulse intermittent and feeble.

In the plague epidemic of 1899-1900 Naja was found  more efficacious than Lachesis. 

Most acute pain, under the nail of left thumb, the pain running up the arm.

Most acute pain and sense of oppression at the chest, as though a hot iron had been run in and a hundredweight put on the top of it.

Hopeless cases of cholera were cured with Naja, in the collapse stage, with pulselessness and difficulty of breathing.

Neuralgic pain in head, preceded or followed by nausea or vomiting, severe throbbing in left orbital region drawing from thence back to occiput; neuralgic pain from over-eating; from mental or physical exertion. 

Headache after cessation of catamenia (Menopause). 

Dull, heavy constriction in forehead on waking.

Dull shoots up occiput. 

Screwing-up sensations and crampy pains: as if head screwed together; as if heart and ovary were drawn up together; crampy pains in left ovary, PAIN FROM L. OVARY TO HEART; pains in temple and ovarian regions. 

Pain from heart to scapula. 

Sensation as of a hair in larynx; pain as from needles in tonsil. 

The left side is predominantly affected.

Complaints are < by touch;  < by riding in carriage; <at 3 p.m. (headache); 

<at night; < after sleep; < by eating ; <by alcohol; <by exertion; <by motion; 

<by walking; < by lying on side; < by lying on left side. 

Great > of pain and breathing by lying on right side. 

Very sensitive to cold. 

> By walking in open air; by smoking.

Anxiety is relieved by  motion.

Suicidal brooding, sadness, despair,  broods over imaginary troubles.

Dullness, sluggishness, difficulty of thinking and comprehending

Confusion of mind, on waking in morning.

Delirium, loquacious, feels being injured by his surroundings, that he is neglected, that he is under superhuman control.

Excitement, as from wine. Forgetful in the evening. Ailments, from grief. Indifference, apathy,  irresolution.

Memory, weak for mental labor. Alternating mood. Vertigo, on coughing. Constriction, in forehead.

Empty, hollow sensation in head. Head eruption, scales, hair, falling.

Head pain on  waking in the morning, after breakfast, in the  noon. Head, pain with  coryza, < on coughing.

Head, pain, after menses. Head, pain after cessation of menses (during menopause).

Head, pain, < mental exertion,< motion, <from riding in a carriage.

Head, pain, > from spirituous liquors. Head, pain,> from tobacco smoking.

Head, pain, as from, blows on  occiput.

Uncovering the head aggravates.

Eyes, agglutinated in the morning, blueness of lids, falling of lids, heaviness of lids,, lachrymation, hard to keep open the lids; eyes spasmodic openness; eye pain in the morning which is > after breakfast; eyes pain from exertion of vision. 

Paralysis of upper eye lids, pupils insensible to light. Exertion of vision aggravates.

Loss of vision (blindness).

Noises in ear, on waking in  morning, during headache.

Periodicity annual; annual hay fever, annual coryza in spring, annual asthmatic breathing

Coryza, without discharge in open air. Coryza, discharge thin watery excoriating.

Dryness inside nose, compelled  blowing nose, but no discharge, heat in the nose.

Face, coldness , bluish, circles around eyes; face, red in evening on rising.

Mouth, clammy, cold-tongue; tongue white; paralysis of tongue; speech unintelligible; swelling of gums and tongue; ulcers on tongue and on fraenum. Looseness and pain of teeth.

Throat, choking constricting - in  the morning, on going to sleep;  redness of throat;, dryness of throat on waking,  disposition to hawk; heat in throat - extending to stomach; inflammation in throat on left side; pain and rawness in throat; post diphtheritic paralysis of throat, spasms of esophagus; stricture of esophagus, swallowing difficult impeded; swallowing impossible. Feeling of constriction in throat, clothing aggravates. 

Appetite diminished, desires alcoholic drinks; emptiness weak feeling, faintness, goneness, hungry feeling; when stomach is empty there are heat flushes; a sensation of lump;  nausea > in open air; nausea during breakfast;  nausea < on riding in a carriage or on the cars; stomach pain > in open  air; vomiting during headache.

Contraction in abdomen on going to bed; sensation as if diarrhoea would come on; emptiness in abdomen > by  pressure; pain in abdomen after dinner, before and during  stool; pain stitching in sides of abdomen, extending to groin.

Diarrhoea after the slightest indiscretion in eating; heat and itching  in the rectum; burning pain in rectum.

Sensation of ball in bladder, calculi in bladder. Scanty urine, mucous sediment, red sediment.

Male feels > from seminal emissions, seminal emissions on waking; sexual passion, increased without erection.

Congestion of ovaries, cramping pain in ovaries especially left - extending to right; leucorrhoea in afternoon; menses scanty; sore pain in vagina during coition.

Constriction in larynx and trachea during sleep. Membranous croup

Sensation of hair, in trachea; heat in larynx; inflammation of larynx; irritation in larynx in  the morning, on waking; irritation in  larynx in the cold air; laryngismus stridulus. 

Mucus in larynx which is ejected with difficulty; pain and rawness in larynx < coughing, when coughing; paralysis of larynx; sensitiveness of larynx; larynx sensitive to cold air, to touch; tickling in the air passages in afternoon 3 p.m.; hoarseness of voice; hoarseness while reading aloud, hoarseness from talking; voice lost; voice weak.

Respiration asthmatic; hay asthma; respiration difficult during night, while lying, < on lying on the left side; respiration difficult on waking; respiration gasping when dozing; breath hot; respiration impeded by stitches in heart; respiration imperceptible; respiration wheezing.

Cough < by open air; cough< on becoming warm in  bed; becoming warm in  bed excites cough; cough < on deep breathing; cough with heart affections; cough from irritation in air passages; cough, from irritation in larynx;, sympathetic cough 

Heart angina pectoris; anxiety in region of heart;  constriction, tension, tightness in chest;  constriction asthmatic ; constriction in heart; dilatation of heart; on chest mottled spots; sensation of emptiness in region of heart; fatty degeneration of heart; fluttering in chest;  hypertrophy of heart; inflammation of bronchial tubes (bronchitis); inflammation of endocardium; murmurs in  chest; oppression in chest on lying on left side; oppression < while walking; chest pain during inspiration; chest pain when lying on left side; chest pain can lie only on  right side; chest pain < by motion, < by deep respiration; rheumatic pain in heart; pain in heart on riding in a carriage - extending to left scapula, extending to left hand, extending to back, extending to nape of neck and shoulder; drawing pain in heart as if heart and ovary were drawn together; sore pain in sternum; palpitation of heart on ascending steps,  palpitation of heart - after excitement, palpitation of heart < on exertion, palpitation of heart <lying on left side, < on motion, < from motion of arms; due to palpitation of heart- is unable to speak, palpitation < on talking, palpitation of heart on turning in bed; palpitation of heart on waking; palpitation < from walking , < from wine; sensation of weakness about heart.

Cramp in back, vesicles in cervical region; heat in dorsal region between scapulae.

Back pain < while lying, < on motion, pain in cervical region, in dorsal region; pain under left scapula; pain between scapulae on moving arms; pain in spine, in dorsal and in lumbar region when in bed at night; sore pain in lumbar region at night; weakness in lumbar region.

Ataxia; chilblains, in feet; coldness of extremities, coldness of upper limbs; coldness of leg; coldness of foot in bed; cramps of shoulder, hand, palms, thigh; paleness, livid, mottled, purple darkness of ankle spreading up the limb; paralysis of extremities - dragging while walking, formication in the leg; heat in  hand and palm, loss of power of motion, numbness of upper limbs, numbness of left side in heart disease; dropsical swelling of extremities; weakness of  extremities; weakness < from walking. Puffy or sweating hands and feet.

Deep sleep, dreams of fire, frightful dreams of murder, of suicide , unremembered dreams.

Sleeplessness, frequent waking, yawning.

Green discharges from ulcers on skin. Itching cicatrices. Sweat on lumbar back and ankles..

Cyanosis, in  infants.

Physical exertion aggravates. Lack of vital heat. Lying on left side aggravates.

Lying on painless side aggravates. Internal stitching pain.

Pulse frequent accelerated elevated exalted fast innumerable rapid;  pulse almost imperceptible, pulse intermittent irregular and slow; pulse, weak.

Rising, ameliorates. Naja is a left sided medicine. Complaints go from left to right.

Complaints are < after sleep. Complaints are > on standing. There is swelling in general.

On waking complaints are <. Walking in open air ameliorates. Wet weather aggravates.

Naja like Lach. is < in damp weather.

Wine aggravates; affected easily by wine or alcoholic drinks.
