Acanthosis nigricans is a skin condition that consists of gray brown hyperpigmented thick plaques on the back and sides of the neck, under the armpits, in folds of the body so really anywhere, can occur on the face, backs of the hands, tops of the feet, anal genital region, inguinal folds, abdomen, areola, lips and mucosal areas are affected, sometimes it tends to happen in unusual places such as tongue; skin becomes thick and velvety; an important aspect of Acanthosis nigricans is that there is a symmetrical distributionin of the formation of hyperpigmented skin; another aspect is that this condition is almost always asymptomatic in the beginning- however a rare condition that can occur is known as a malignancy associated Acanthosis nigricans but this condition typically occurs in older adults and has a very fast onset.
It is not so much a
skin disease but a skin manifestation of an underlying metabolic problem most commonly insulin resistance which is something
that happens in individuals who are on their way to developing or already have
type 2 diabetes.
It also can occur in
polycystic ovary syndrome. Rarely, acanthosis nigricans can be a warning sign
of a cancerous tumour in an internal organ, such as the stomach or liver. There
is increased incidence with increased weight. Some medications such as oral
contraceptives, antipsychotic drugs etc also contribute to occurrence of
Acanthosis nigricans. Treatment of underlying conditions may restore some of
the normal colour and texture to affected areas of skin.
